Joost specialises in dispute resolution and has a leading practice in collective action litigation, where he represents various claims foundations. As lead counsel, Joost has secured groundbreaking judgments regarding, inter alia, information inequality and the determination of the use of illegal manipulation tools by various car manufacturers. Joost has years of experience in the settlement of multijurisdictional disputes, mass claims and in litigation financing. Additionally, he has an extensive track record in commercial disputes – including product liability – and corporate disputes, such as shareholder disputes, directors’ liability litigation and insolvency related cases.
Besides being a strong litigator, Joost is known also for his diplomatic approach to managing complex cases. He brings parties to the table, establishing and mitigating the various pressure points wherever he can.
Joost is one of the founding partners of Birkway and has practised law for more than 25 years. Previously, he worked at the first major litigation boutique in the Netherlands and was a partner at Viotta Advocaten. He is fluent in Dutch and English.
