Thijs works on civil litigation matters, including collective actions under the Dutch Mass Claims Settlement Act (WAMCA), liability law and commercial disputes. He has a particular interest in cases that seek to address unlawful conduct by large companies or multinationals, especially where this concerns environmental pollution or other forms of societal harm.
Before joining Birkway, Thijs worked at a boutique law firm focusing on collective actions and mass claims, where he was involved in collective actions, mass claims and commercial disputes. Prior to that, he worked for several years at an international law firm, first as a tax specialist and later as a tax lawyer. He advised companies and represented them in tax disputes, particularly in the areas of VAT, customs and EU law. Through his background in tax law, Thijs has extensive experience with proceedings in which national law, EU law and economic interests are closely intertwined.
Thijs studied tax law and law & business studies at Leiden University, where he also completed his master’s degree in tax law. During his studies, he spent a semester studying in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Thijs worked since 2019 as a tax specialist, was admitted to the Dutch Bar in 2023 and is fluent in Dutch and English.
