Michiel’s career as a litigator developed in the aftermath of the global financial crisis when he joined one of the first boutique firms in the Netherlands, specializing in banking and finance litigation. He assists clients in their interactions with financial regulators and sector disciplinary bodies, as well as advising on conflicts with banks and insurance companies. He has deep expertise in all aspects of financial regulation, including with respect to anti-money laundering, cryptocurrency and blockchain/distributed ledger technology.
He started his legal career in the corporate department of an Amsterdam-based Magic Circle firm, where he focused on restructuring and large financial transactions. Michiel is trusted adviser for start-ups in the fintech industry, trust offices and fund managers and his expertise is also valued in relation to professional negligence disputes, data privacy regulation and fraud-related claims. Michiel has degrees in law and economics from Utrecht University and was admitted to the Bar in 2001.
Michiel loves postmodern art and is a fanatic jogger and tennis player. His favorite quote is “Justice is truth in action.” (Benjamin Disraeli).
